LESSON#9 – Creating a snow scene

  • Creating snow surfaces;
  • Creating fog with Zdepth Channel;
  • Creating snow fall with Particle Systems (Blizzard);
  • Compositing a snow scene in Photoshop;
  • Use of Push/Pull tool;
  • Use of  VRaydisplacementMod for snow surfaces;

Snow Creation

Create scenes with snow it’s one of the most interesting issues inside the 3d field; In this video you will notice that is really important create a very detailed geometry for the snow, even the material could be really basic with only a diffuse map, but the model of the snow should be good enough, you can notice that VRaydisplacementMod it’s a really helpful tool for achieve a good snow effect. On the video you will learn another interesting topic, the creation of snow fall with the use of  Particle Systems using the Blizzard tool and forces like Wind and Deflectors.

In the next image you can see the difference between the star point and the final scene after apply Push/Pull tool, applying materials, VRaydisplacementMod, Zdepth channel, snow generated by Blizzard and Color correction:

In the next video I’m going to show you the necessary tools to create the elements for a winter scene without plugins o scripts.

  • The snow material could be simple, put attention in the snow modeling!!.
  • Push/Pull it’s in the Edit Poly menu.
  • Press CTRL+M over the selected polygon to create more divisions.
  • Blizzard it’s the perfect tool to create snow fall, you can find it on the Particle Systems menu.
  • Use the Zdepth element to create fog; In Photoshop press CTRL+I to inverse it.
  • Put the Zdepth element on Screen mode to create the fog effect.

Let’s go to the lesson:

CONCEPTS:

  • 1st select the Deflector or Force, after that, select Bind to Space Warp to link it to Blizzard;
  • The Push tool works with negative values, while Push work with positive values;
  • More subdivisions on the mesh more detailed will be the snow effect, but, work only with the necessary geometry;
  • Save the Zdepth channel without Alpha, because this will help you to inverse it correctly in Photoshop;
  • Use the Relax Tool when the VRayDisplacementMod creates imperfections on the displacement;

DAYLIGHT LIGHTING ON A SNOW SCENE

In the video, you may notice that I used a specific lighting for the scene, it’s important think in a logic way to lighting the scene, one of the most important topics of the 5SRW is never change the intensity of the VRaySun, but, in this case we made an exception, you can notice that we have a cloudy sky which is a semisphere with a texture inside a VRayLightMaterial, in this way we can achieve a good ambient light, the same result if you use a VRaylightDome with white light, but if we light the scene only with an ambient light we won’t have contrast on the displacement of the snow, and may looks flat, this is the reason of the VRaySun on the scene, create contrast with the shadows, but the question is, why reduce the intensity? just because in real life the clouds stop the direct light of the sun, this cause less intensity lighting and soft shadows, so that is the reason of reduce the intensity.

EXERCISE:

Download the scene and create the snow scene, you can use the scene form the last lesson to start the exercise, and you can download the solution and PSD file. Remember to use CTRL + M to add subdivisions for PUSH / PULL.
